Vermilion Lakes freezes in these wild, cracked patterns some winters, and this particular morning the ice had split wide open just as the sun came up directly behind Mount Rundle, throwing a full starburst across the frame. I couldn’t have planned that sun placement if I tried — it was just one of those lucky mornings where everything lined up.
