This arch is one of my favourites in the Alabama hills. It has such a unique shape to it, it really stands apart from the rest. It was sunset when I walked out to the arch and noticed a few other photographers setting up. To my dismay they were all setting up further back taking a wider shot, this was going to complicate things since I wanted to get right up close to the arch for the wide perspective. Knowing my abilities and what I wanted to capture I sat back and waited, we all chatted about photography and our adventures. As blue hour approached I asked the others if I could run up and shoot my compositions quickly, since I didn’t interfere early they were all more than happy to pause. I sprinted over to the arch and captured a few of my ideal shots. In all it took me about 5 minutes to get everything I needed. One of them said “that’s it?” I laughed and said “yeah, if I need to I can fix it in post?”, a common joke among creators. Later that night I got up and captured the Milky Way in the same location to blend in with the sky. I tend to gravitate to this method of shooting the Milky Way because the detail and quality in the image is better than doing it all at night. If that evening taught me anything it’s that when it comes down to it I can handle the pressure.
