Locals call this lake “The Wolf” because of the way it seems to howl into the valley from up on the parkway. I nearly gave up on this shot entirely — I sat in my car for a good hour while the rain came down and the wind wouldn’t quit. But something told me to go anyway, so I hiked out, set up behind a tree for cover, and waited. Right as the sun dropped behind the peaks, the clouds broke open and the whole sky exploded with colour, all of it mirrored perfectly in that unreal blue water. That’s the kind of payoff that keeps you coming back out in weather you have no business being in.
One of the more expansive views in the Canadian Rockies is up on the Parkway. This Lake with its incredible blue hue sits deep in the valley at the foot of a glacier. Nick named “The Wolf” the lake appears to be howling into the valley. One evening as I decided to venture to this place in search of a brilliant sunset. When I arrived the clouds were thick and low, the wind was viscous and the the rain was relentless. I spent a good hour sitting in the car contemplating giving up and going somewhere else. Finally I convinced myself to go anyways. I made my way to the look out and set my gear up behind a tree to find from the elements. Slowly as the sun sank behind the peaks the clouds slowly started light up. Suddenly the sun found an opening and the sky exploded catching all of the rain. It was exhilarating to witness.
